i originally had the yamaha hs5, i sold them to get the D5 without even hearing them. i bought them based on reviews..and i must say they are excellent monitors. wide sweet spot , details of all the highs and mids all there.. the bass on these sound really good as well for a monitor this size.. i love them, strongly recommended !!!!
I have had these monitors for about 6 months and have done a good amount of listening and mixing through them. I am coming from years of using the JBL LSR 4328P. I feel I have made an upgrade. The d5's design produces the most realistic mids I have heard in any monitor, which is the most important thing when crafting a mix. My mixes have certainly improved. I have done several remixes on the d5's and sent them to colleagues to listen in their own systems, and they agreed that the mixes I am making with these boxes are decisively more open and punchy, clear and huge. To sum up everything I love about these monitors: realistic, life-like, wide-open and 3D, they give clear insight into the critical midrange that makes EQ, compression, panning and level decisions much easier, they are highly portable and affordable. These are my new primary mixing monitor. As crazy as it sounds, I would take them over my old JBL's in most situations, as fantastic as those monitors are.
These speakers saved my butt. The mid range is fantastic and the top end is silky clean. They faithfully project sound that translates on multiple systems incredibly well. You can arrive at the accurate tweeking decision quickly and move on. These speakers make it easy to do. You can counter the sub end with good phones to make sure if you need to.
The build quality is solid and they arrived very well packed for the trip.
The customer relations are great! These are good folks. I truly believe this is the best speaker purchase I could have made.
I did a lot of research on studio monitors. I am someone who refuses to buy anything that does not have either perfect reviews or reviews that have at least been reconciled by the company. With that said I read a lot about these before I purchased them. Relatively new company, not much word about them, etc. Yet every single word written about these is positive. Not only positive but glowing. So I decided there was apparently nothing to lose.
After setting these up in my studio and aligning them just right I was able to pick out things in my mix I never imaged were there before. I can move a sound what seems like 2 inches in the sound field with ease. These speakers and their accuracy is absolutely dominant in their price range. If this is the amount of money you want to spend on a studio monitor do not think twice because your second thought will have been a wasted one.
Ease your mind, you have found your choice. Peace!
Straight to the point! I owned a pair of KRK5 for about 2 years. One went out ,so I starting searching for a new replacement pair.I decided on the D5's after extensive research. While waiting for the D5's to arrive I fixed the bad KRK.Once the D5's arrived I did was an A/B test between the KRK's and the D5's.***After one listen I knew that these are the best moniors in this price range I have ever heard in my life***.I instantly started mixing a song I have been toying with for the last month or so. I bounced the track out and uploaded to my MP3 player and the translation was amazing. What I really like is how easy it is to detect issues with the mix.Now I use my KRK's for loud speakers, they are just too loose and colorful for the type of mixes I do.(HipHop/R&B/Techno/House) I am blown away by these speakers. My mix time is now cut down by 65% and improving. It is fun to mix again!!!!!!!Awesome product
I have no fear in comparing these monitors with Adam ,Genelec or Focal due to the amazing clarity and accuracy of the sound.
To my taste these monitors are the best choice available on the market for a home studio.
I bought a set of D5's figuring they'd serve as 2nd monitors or worst case maybe my living room stereo. I came into audio engineering from an audiophile perspective, and thanks to Equator I've finally shed the last of that bias.
What I'm hearing in these D5's is that my ProAcs are quite coloured but in a balanced way, and I'm discovering just how revealing an "unmusical" (aka uncoloured) speaker can be. I'm listening to my older mixes and either cringing or enjoying them more than I ever have, and in particular some classic albums that have a mysterious and elusive feel to them I find myself saying, "I know how they did that!"
I'm done with coloured up audiophile euphonia, I wanna hear the nuts and bolts! From the mixing I've done on these so far, it's so obvious what's mixed well and what isn't it's like cheating. I'm waiting for the invoice that says I have to send another three installments of $299, which I gladly would.
I've been recently using D5 monitors for film editing cuts and ambient sound loops. Everything is clear and distinct. Scene to scene level balance is good. It speeds up the process. I cut without a subwoofer and review with subwoofer switched in. So far no changes have been needed in subsequent mixing or actual venue review. Forget the price. These D5 monitors are good. Everyone is happy.
I have been tracking and mixing with the D5's for a few months now and I must say they are superb! Excellent clarity and stereo imaging. I've turned these monitors on to several other folks on the Cakewalk forums.
I AB'd these against my Dynaudio BM5 MKII's which are much more expensive, and the D5's were a clear winner. You won't find a better pair of monitors for 3 times the price, never mind the $299 they sell for. And Ted Keffalo is a great guy to deal with. GET THESE!
I just mixed a pop/rock album with D5s and I'm very pleased with the results. The studio I mixed in is a Hidley designed studio and has an SSL G+/E series desk with Pro Tools HD. Using the studio's Kinoshita large-field monitors as a reference (being that they are some of the most accurate monitors in the world) I was able to compare the mixes with a proven standard. The mixes from the D5s were outstanding with excellent translation from studio to home/car stereos. I also compared the mixes with Yamaha NS-10ms, which are a studio standard. I found that the mixes done on the NS-10ms would likely need more in the way of mastering, since it seems the D5s brought out more of the frequencies I needed to cut to make the mix balance correctly. I've been mixing on NS-10s for decades but the D5s may well become my monitor for near-fields. Overall I'm very happy with the D5s and would recommend them to anyone looking for a great active monitors. For the price these things are astonishing.
I have used the D5's for a several months now and love them! They translate really well to other listening environments. Can't ask for much more at this price point. Great Sound, Great Deal!
The mids are very clear...mixes translating very well...I loved it!!!
I have been looking for a pair of near field monitors for some time, and frankly, unless you spend $1000.00+ they are mostly junk! Even some $1,000+ are junk! After reading about the D5's, and not finding a single negative review, I decided to try them, even though the low price made me suspicious. Don't be fooled, these monitors are excellent, regardless of price. At $299.00 a pair, don't even bother looking at anything else. They are an absolute steal!
Now, I've heard other monitors that are much more expensive than this (I spent good time around a pair of Yamaha HS80M's with someone I know) and those are hands-down better than these, but each HS80M speaker costs more than this pair does. After having listened with the 80's for about 10 hours, though, the D5's are certainly not hard to come back to.
It has a very clear bass for monitors so small, even though the bass itself does not go terribly deep. Meaning it's probably not the best choice in the world for making really bass-heavy dubstep or techno music, but well recorded bass guitars sound beautiful in these. The mid range is where it shines, though. It has a very clear mid-range, as in what you hear is how it is. I've read about a lot of professionals having these things as reference monitors.
I put a lot of research into monitors in this price range, and I landed on these for a reason. You won't be using the guaranteed 60 day return if you get these.
I had been lusting and saving for a serious pair of self powered monitors. In the 5"-7" woofer range.
My sonic list was short. Focal, Adams,Genelic.
Having read the reviews, albeit late in the game,by industry ears I respect, I now own a pair of D5s mounted on your foam wedges.
Which points these ported beauties right at my ears. Sonic Jewels that have made my pocket smile and my ears euphoric!
transparent and clearly defined presence through out the entire sonic range. Man have you beat them good. You have changed the game. the new standard,Hail the change!

Dear Marty, Ted and all at Equator Audio,
I received my pair of D5's a little over a week ago and after quite a few hours using them at all levels, mixing, going back to previous mixes and playing music in general, I thought I would drop a line to congratulate you for this incredible little pair of monitors that provide a formidable performance.
I had been mixing with another high quality brand for some time and the difference is quite noticeable, my mixes have improved greatly since I got the D5's. I now finish my sessions with a big smile in my face, not just because of the results that I get but also because my ears don't get as tired as with my previous (now sold) monitors.
I also want to say thank you to Marty for a very friendly approach and excellent communication, every step of the way.
I would repeat my experience with Equator and I will no doubt recommend you and the D5.
These are by far the best monitors I've owned, both in terms of overall quality as well as the price:quality ratio. Their clarity is unlike any other set of speakers I've used, and the range is really broad. These are professional grade speakers at amateur prices, and I am positive that Equator has set the standard for home studios with the D5s.
I've had the D5's for a few days, after UPS screwed up and lost my 1st pair from Equator.
I can't believe the stereo image these things have.
I'm in love with these things.
I also just got a Pair of EVENT 20/20 V3 and the D5's are just as good if not better and at a quarter of the price I paid for the 20/20's.
Thanks to TED & MARTY.
After hearing about these D5 speakers, I called Equator and happened to get Ted, the president. He took the time to explain the design and specs. of these coaxial speakers. I asked him if they would sound any better than the speakers I have already (Alesis Monitor Ones) and he said, yes.....so, I ordered them knowing I could return them if I didn't like them.....Wow..he was right....I would say night and day difference....the audio just "opened up" and I could pinpoint things that I never heard before in my mixes.....I would say you could not go wrong getting these fine speakers at a great price.
